Arsenal’s Summer of Rebuilding : What do the Gunners need this Transfer Window?

Arsenal, gunners transfer news, Arsenal transfer window, transfer window

Arsenal has seen its fair share of highs and lows during the 2018-19 season. Under the tutelage of Unai Emery, the Gunners have showed some sparks of promise while they’ve been guilty of repeating the old mistakes on other days.

Thus, there is a sense at the Emirates that the current squad isn’t particularly blessed with the ability to challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool at this juncture, creating a buzz for Arsenal Transfer News right before the transfer window.

Though they aren’t wrong, it now leads the Gunners to the question: What areas shall they strengthen in the summer? The answer is pretty much everywhere.

To start off with, Arsenal’s defence still looks a disaster waiting to unravel with players of the ilk of Shkodran Mustafi and Carl Jenkinson just not good enough for a side hoping to challenge for top honours. Hence, one of the most problematic areas they need to rectify is their defence.

In addition, Nacho Monreal, Sokratis and Laurent Koscielny are well into their thirties, indicating that the trio might not have too many top notch seasons left in them.

Apart from the central defensive frailties, the Gunners also need to be in the market for a defensively reliable left back, capable of playing as a conventional full-back, unlike Sead Kolasinac.

As for midfield, the Emirates outfit bought Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi to add muscle last summer. Though the pair has given a good account of themselves so far, an injury to either still leaves the Gunners with the troubling prospect of fielding Mohamed Elneny in midfield.

While the central midfield positions might not be the most burning issue at Arsenal, it certainly is one they would want to address. Thus, a robust, tough-tackling and efficient midfielder could be on their wish-list too.

Another area Arsenal would want to add strength to would be the wide midfield positions. Throughout the course of the season, the North London side has relied on its full-backs to provide width with none of its current attacking midfielders capable of acting as a direct offensive winger. Though the said tactic has worked a charm at times, it has left them woefully short of numbers on other occasions.

With such ailments plaguing the entire squad, the Gunners would be relieved that they don’t need to strengthen their striking department any time soon. Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang are at the top of their respective games and are showing no signs of slowing down.

Hence, there are problems aplenty in the red half of North London with the Gunners needing some serious investment in the summer.

Though the Arsenal transfer news mill has started churning out rumours already, most famously linking Nicolas Tagliafico and Samuel Umtiti, not many of them are expected to come to fruition with money being a major stumbling block.

Akin to last season, Emery is rumoured to have limited funds at his disposal. Thus, highlighting that the Gunners might just have to compete in a lower grade market than they would’ve liked.

A massive off-season awaits Arsenal and while they might have all the right intentions to revamp their squad, they might just not have the financial clout to do so.
