Five Incredible things learnt from the Spain vs Morocco clash as La Roja fail to impress again

The Group B games drew to a close on Monday, and Spain along with Portugal qualified for the knockout stages of the FIFA World cup 2018.[spacer height=”30px”]

The game between Spain and Morocco finished 2-2 with some high voltage drama in the final minutes of the game. Morocco almost sealed a historic win against the former world champions, but Aspas had other ideas as he pounced and finished brilliantly with a backheel to ensure points were shared.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]Portugal were also held by Iran in the other game and it was a heartbrake for them. In my opinion, the two European Giants were extremely lucky in this group stage as they just edged out, but Morocco and Iran will leave the tournament with their heads held high.[spacer height=”30px”]

Here are the things learnt from the Spain vs Morocco clash:[spacer height=”30px”]

1. Spain aren’t world cup favourites anymore:[spacer height=”30px”]

La Roja were absolutely poor on the day and didn’t deserve to win at all costs. This has been their pattern throughout the group stage, when only Andres Iniesta, Diego Costa and Isco played well for Spain. They struggled against Iran and almost lost against Morocco. This is not the champions way to start the campaign.[spacer height=”30px”]

With France and England playing well comparatively and others struggling, I don’t see Spain winning the world cup this time.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]2. Isco is important for Spain’s challenge:[spacer height=”30px”]

Although the team was poor, there were special performances from few players. Isco was brilliant on the night, but couldn’t steer his team home. He was ever present in the midfield and always tried to link up with Iniesta to find an opening.[spacer height=”30px”]

But it wasn’t Spain’s night as they couldn’t find a proper final ball and finish.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]If Spain are to challenge in the further stages, their Defense need to step up and stop leaking easy goals.[spacer height=”30px”]

3. Morocco opened their account in some style:[spacer height=”30px”]

Having lost the previous two games by a margin of one goal, and also failing to score in any of those, no one would have predicted them to pick up a point against Spain. But they almost managed an upset and beat the Spaniards.[spacer height=”30px”]

The team was well organised on the day and competed with Spain on all fronts. Although it went ugly in the last minutes of the game, it was a good performance from them and many positives are to be taken.[spacer height=”30px”]

4. VAR again plays it’s part:[spacer height=”30px”]

No matter how much we hate it,  it comes again and breaks hearts. Morocco were winning and then came VAR, and the decision for Offside was overturned and rightly so and Aspas got his goal which led to a 2-2 draw between Spain and Morocco.[spacer height=”30px”]

Spain finished at the top with the point against Morocco as the group stage ended for Group B.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]5. One cannot predict the winner of the world time this time around:[spacer height=”30px”]

All big guns have fallen in the tournament, after playing some poor football, which is against their high standards. Be it Spain, Portugal, Germany, Brazil, Argentina..all have been taken down by small teams in this tournament.[spacer height=”30px”]

Only the likes of France and England have been better with Harry Kane in great form for the latter. This leads one to believe that it will be difficult for fans to predict the winner this time, as most results have led to raised eyebrows and one cannot rule out an unlikely winner this time.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]Till then we gear up for Ozil and Xhaka in action tonight for their respective countries.[spacer height=”30px”]
