Deal Done: €10m Rated Arsenal Defender Completes Move to Newly-Promoted Premier League Side Sheffield United

Auston Trusty, Sheffield United

According to latest reports, Sheffield United have completed the signing of Arsenal defender Auston Trusty on a permanent deal. The USMNT international made his mark after a successful loan spell with Birmingham City last season.

August is here and we are marching towards the end of the 2023 summer transfer window. Therefore, the Gunners do not want to waste time in setting up their squad before the Premier League campaign kicks off. This includes finalising both the new signings as well as the exits.

According to Football London, Arsenal defender Auston Trusty has joined Sheffield United on a permanent deal. have completed the signing of Trusty. The Gunners would pocket around £5m from the deal. The American will join the newly promoted Premier League club, bringing his one-and-a-half-year tenure at the Emirates to a close.

The North London club announced his departure, with the club’s Sporting Director, Edu Gasper, wishing him well. Edu told the club’s official website:

“We are so proud to see how far Auston has come and the journey he has been on. If you look at him when he joined us compared to now when he is leaving us, he has achieved so much.

“We see him now, a USA international having won Player of the Season with Birmingham City in a competitive league, which you have to remember was his first in English football. He now moves to a Premier League club where he will play top-flight football.

“Everyone involved in Auston’s progression to this point should have great satisfaction in the steps he has taken, moving on to this new challenge.”

However, the Blades were not the only team after Trusty’s signature in this transfer window. The 24-year-old defender was linked to a number of clubs this summer, including Rangers and Ipswich Town. Recent reports pointed out that Rangers boss Michael Beale still preferred him as his left-back option. However, talks collapsed as the Scottish club focused on other positions.

Ipswich Town were interested in the US international following his successful loan spell with Birmingham City last season. Playing in the Championship, he became a regular under manager John Eustace. The defender appeared in 48 games and had 4 goals and 2 assists for the club (stats via Transfermarkt). He even won the Supporters’ Player of the Season award with Birmingham.

Auston Trusty was bought by Arsenal for a fee of around £1.8m in January 2022. However, he was immediately loaned back to Colorado Rapids to see off the MLS season. He was then loaned to Birmingham City so he would get some game time and adjust to the English conditions.

Returning to the Emirates this summer after his loan spell, the defender was included in the squad for the pre-season tour of the U.S. He helped the North Londoners win the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge by hitting the crossbar from range. However, he appeared for just 10 minutes as a substitute in the actual match against the All-Stars. Moreover, he did not even feature in the friendlies against Manchester United and Barcelona.

With no significant game time during the pre-season, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta could not have made it clearer his intentions about the defender’s place in the squad. The club have also brought in Jurrien Timber from Ajax for defence, and have injured defenders like William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu achieving full fitness soon. Thus, selling Auston Trusty to Sheffield United for a profit makes sense tactically, and economically as well.
