Arsenal have been handed a boost in the pursuit of Swiss defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to reports. Zakaria, who plays for German club Borussia Monchengladbach, has told the club about his wish to leave this summer.
Mikel Arteta is slowly making progress with new arrivals this summer, and it is believed that Arteta needs more midfield players despite the signing of Albert Sambi Lokonga. Though the manager may have a point here as Granit Xhaka has also been heavily linked with a move to AS Roma under Jose Mourinho.
According to Monchengladbach sporting director, Zakaria prefers a transfer rather than signing a new deal at the German club. Max Eberl has admitted that the midfielder wants to leave the club:
“With Denis, we have been trying to extend his contract since October. Denis and his management told us pretty clearly that he would prefer a transfer this summer.”
Zakaria is certainly a promising player which was evident through his performances at the Euro 2020. He was part of the Swedish national team that reached the quarter-finals. The 24-year old defensive midfielder is an experienced campaigner, and a move to the Emirates might elevate his qualities furthermore.
The question remains do Arsenal need this particular player, and there can be different opinions of course, but looking at what Mikel Arteta is trying to build, the player fits quite well with the plans. The imminent departure of Xhaka to Roma will create a void in midfield that has to be filled.

However, with the player being highly rated, there are concerns regarding the competition from other potential clubs that might be interested in signing the player. Manchester City are also keeping a close eye on any developments and may consider moving in for the player. The Citizens can be a significant obstacle for Gunners to overcome if they are to sign the Monchengladbach player.
It all depends on Mikel Arteta and Edu to decide how to persuade the player to come to the Emirates, making him understand the chances of his growth at Arsenal and better playtime compared to that at City. Zakaria is a perfect blend of youth and experience which will answer a lot of problems for the Gunners in the midfield area.

Denis Zakaria has a price stamp of around €40 million, which is a hefty fee for Arsenal, having already spent around £80 this summer. However, Mikel Arteta and Edu have conveyed this summer that they are clear about their objectives and the selection of players and would make sure they sign their transfer targets before the window closes.
So far how Arsenal have moved in the transfer market, fans and supporters would not be surprised if Arsenal does make a formal approach to sign the player. Arsenal are also linked with another midfield prospect, James Maddison, and are looking to crack a swap deal with Leicester City. It’s a waiting game for now.
