Brighton Eyeing Move for Out-of-favour Manchester United Defender to Replace Marc Cucurella

Brighton & Hove Albion have expressed interest in signing Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams this summer, according to reports. The Seagulls are preparing for the departure of Marc Cucurella and have identified the English defender as a potential replacement.

Pep Guardiola wants to bring in a new left-back and thus, the Citizens have set their sights on Brighton full-back Marc Cucurella. Moreover, with Arsenal recently completing the signing of Oleksandr Zinchenko, City could accelerate their pursuit of the Spanish defender.

Brandon Williams is a right-footed left-back similar to the United legend Denis Irwin. He shows a lot of character and aggression in his game-play, which most managers want. The 21-year-old defender graduated through United’s academy and had a decent first season with the Red Devils. However, he was sent on loan to Norwich City last season to get more game time under his belt.

According to The Mirror, Brighton are looking to sign Brandon Williams from Manchester United in a £15 million deal. The Seagulls have pointed out the English full-back as an ideal replacement for Marc Cucurella. Manchester City are yet to meet Brighton’s asking price for the Spanish left-back. However, manager Graham Potter believes that City will get their deal done for the Spaniard.

Unlike Cucurella, Williams is a right-footed left-back. This might force the Brighton manager to make a few changes to his system that makes the job a bit easier for Brandon Williams. Moreover, the Spanish full-back has established himself as one of the best ball-playing full-backs in the Premier League. He loves to create chances, provide key passes, and does not shy away from whipping in a cross.

However, that is not what Graham Potter would expect from the Englishman. The 21-year-old is still exploring the attacking side of his game-play. Nevertheless, Williams compensates for that with his non-stop running and hard tackling. Potter will also have to work on the player’s discipline as the latter received 9 yellow cards across all competitions last season (stats via transfermarkt).

Should Manchester United Give The Green Light To Brandon Williams For A Move?

Brandon Williams made his debut for Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the 2019-20 season. The United fans liked Williams as he did the job well and offered extra passion on the pitch. He also found his first goal for the Red Devils in his very first senior season at the club. This made the fans even more satisfied with his performances.

Not only that but the fans like him more since he has graduated from the club academy. However, the arrival of Alex Telles resulted in Williams leaving the club on a one-year loan deal. He did get some experience from the loan spell but that is still not enough for the levels that United need to compete with the very best.

In addition, Manchester United have also recently signed Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord this summer. The Dutchman is also a left-back and has impressed the fans and the manager in the pre-season friendlies. This has put Williams further down the pecking order. Manchester United need a strong season and they will need better recruitments to achieve that.

However, they now have to mostly rely on the funds they will get from the player sales. Since Brandon Williams will most likely not get enough minutes at United, it makes perfect sense for the player to move to Brighton as well as for the Red Devils to cash in on the player.

This might allow United to make one more extra signing before the transfer window closes. This will also be a good move for the 21-year-old as Potter will certainly work on the player and get the best out of him.
