Arsenal Back in the Run for Highly-Rated French Midfielder but is he the Type of Player the Gunners Need?

Houssem Aouar, Arsenal

Word has it that the on, off, on, off and now on-again, transfer of Houssem Aouar could finally get over the line in the summer. It appears Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar remain interested, but that the transfer will only happen if Lyon agree to a reduced valuation and the player reduces his wage demands.

The problem has been the failure to reach an agreement with both club and player, plus Arsenal’s hefty expenditure in the summer. It’s also thought that any deal will require Artera to offload several peripheral players to free up funds if he’s genuinely serious about the midfielder.

I wasn’t overly fussed by the prospect of his arrival because of Aouar’s instant dismissal of the North London club’s approach or the lukewarm reaction to their interest. If a player isn’t invested in a move, then don’t bother coming, but it appears that all involved wanted to play down any move in the previous attempts.

From what I’ve seen and heard, Houssem Aouar can play within himself and depending on the circumstances, hauls himself around the pitch in an almost casual fashion or as we term in at AD ‘cruise mode’. If Aouar arrives for a significant sum and with a big reputation, he will need to get his shoulder behind the wheel or stay where he is as an inconsistent enigma.

Friends who watch far more foreign football than myself have flicked from rave reviews of the player to barely lukewarm and it’s clear he can’t afford to go slowly through the gears at Arsenal. With the Mesut Ozil debacle still fresh in supporters’ minds, the Emirates hasn’t got room for another passenger and as Tomiyasu proved one doesn’t need an adjustment period. The ‘getting to know you season’ is simply a good excuse to go through the gears on big money.

I’m being harsh I guess, but let’s avoid another signature we regret in a hurry and one that we’re unable to undo without pain and a great deal of expense. You have to trust the judgement of both Arteta and Edu following the signings of Ramsdale, Lokonga, Tavares, Odegaard, White and Tomiyasu, all of which have been excellent purchases in our opinion.

Hopefully, the process that the duo employed which examined character as much as the individual ability will be employed again. Houssem Aouar is a fine player, no doubt, but is he an Arsenal type player?

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
