Man United Reportedly in Pole Position to Sign Premier League Midfielder, Offer Already Made to Player

Christian Eriksen, Manchester United, Brentford

According to latest reports, Manchester United are leading the race to sign Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen. The 30-year-old midfielder will become a free agent at the end of June and is currently looking for a new club. The Red Devils have expressed interest in signing Eriksen who they think can be crucial to their rebuild plans.

Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field while playing for Denmark in the Euro 2020. Thankfully, he made a comeback to football and started his recovery by training with Ajax where manager Erik ten Hag oversaw his recovery first-hand. He then decided to join Brentford to get some game-time at the top level.

Last week, it was reported by The Athletic that Manchester United have made their interest official by making an offer to Christian Eriksen. On the other hand, Brentford are also keen on renewing his contract. That is understandable considering how important he has been for the Bees since his return to the Premier League.

Tottenham were also reportedly keen on signing the midfielder. Moreover, the player himself favoured to stay at Brentford or join Spurs, effectively rejecting a move to Old Trafford, as reported by The Guardian. The Dane confirmed that he is looking at more offers from other clubs too:

“I have different offers and options, which we are considering, and then we make a decision. I would love to play Champions League football again. I know how much fun it is, but it isn’t essential for me.”

However, according to Football London, Tottenham seem to have distanced themselves from signing the 30-year-old. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano backed up these claims by stating Antonio Conte is more focused on improving his defence and attack.

Now, Daily Star has reported that Manchester United have been given clear path to sign Christian Eriksen this summer. The Red Devils are now in pole position to sign the Danish international, with the Spurs boss not interested in a move for the player.

United have to make sure that they sign the right players in this transfer window. They have already confirmed eleven departures, but not a single player signed so far. The board needs to support Ten Hag if they are to become an elite club in Europe once again. Christian Eriksen could be the statement signing for United and a much-needed reinforcement following the departure of Paul Pogba.

What Could Be The Role Of Christian Eriksen At Manchester United?

It is very likely that the Rec Devils will shift their system to a 4-3-3 that the Dutch manager favours. If the Danish midfielder arrives at the Old Trafford, then Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen will be the two likely starters in the middle of the park for United.

Eriksen is most comfortable in the number 10 position but the 4-3-3 system does not have that role. However, we have seen at Brentford that he can comfortably slot into a 3-man midfield without a fuss. Nevertheless, they desperately need to sign a central defensive midfielder to win consistently. United have struggled in the absence of a proper defensive midfielder for the past few years.

Erik ten Hag prefers technical players and the Dane fits the bill perfectly. Moreover, he is not just an outstanding technical player, but he also has an impeccable vision that helps him find a killer pass to open up the opposition defence. His passing ability helps him create greater chances for his team.

Without a defensive midfielder, both Fernandes and Eriksen are going to fail. Along with that, the whole team will collectively fail if a strong enough midfield is not present on the pitch. Therefore, there is a possibility that Ten Hag could use him as a backup option for the Portuguese midfielder. However, it may not be very wise to leave a player of Eriksen’s calibre on the bench at United.

Consequently, the Red Devils could get their best return on the pitch if the two midfielders play side-by-side. Nevertheless, the Dutchman will have to find a system that finds the best use for both the players. If Ten Hag finds a way to accommodate all his best players together in one system, then it could be a little stressful for any opponent that go up against Manchester United.
