4-2-3-1 With Varane, Malacia & Sancho | How Man United’s Starting XI Could Look Like Against Liverpool

Manchester United vs Liverpool

We take a look at the probable Manchester United line-up as they renew their age-old rivalry against Liverpool on Monday in what will be the third game of the 2022/23 season.

Amongst the Premier League’s most anticipated fixtures of the season, Manchester United host arch-rivals, Liverpool, at Old Trafford as both clubs look forward to earning their first three points of the campaign. Having witnessed an underwhelming start to the season, both managers will be keen on settling for nothing less than a victory at Old Trafford, with the fixture expected to provide for a thrilling watch.

After a humiliating result against Brentford, United will be keen on avoiding a disappointing result against Liverpool. With the team having shown negligible improvement in their application on the pitch in recent outings, United manager Erik ten Hag is expected to make a number of changes to the starting line-up on Monday.

Moreover, with the Red Devils having suffered an inexcusable loss against Liverpool at Old Trafford last season, Ten Hag will be looking to avoid a similar result, with the manager expected to continue employing a proactive approach despite an underwhelming start to the season.

Having intensified their transfer activity following a wave of vitriol from the fanbase and reports of a potential buyer for the club, United are expected to significantly bolster their ranks ahead of deadline day. Although the club officially announced the arrival of Casemiro from Real Madrid on Friday, the midfielder is ineligible to feature against Liverpool on Monday.

Having sustained injuries, both Victor Lindelof and Facundo Pellistri remain out of contention for the game against Liverpool, although forward Anthony Martial is expected to be named on the bench having trained with the team throughout the week following a minor injury.

Expected to employ a proactive approach despite the recent disappointments, Ten Hag will be looking to capitalise on Liverpool’s injury issues heading into the fixture. Likely to nullify the visitors’ attacking threat through the flanks whilst focusing on gaining control of the game during phases across both halves, United will be keen on earning a positive result on Monday.

Goalkeeper

David De Gea (GK): Despite an underwhelming performance against Brentford, De Gea is likely to retain his place in goal at Old Trafford on Monday. With teams having repeatedly exploited his weaknesses hitherto, the Spaniard will be keen on developing his skillset moving forward.

Defenders

Diogo Dalot (RB): With no challengers for his position, Dalot is expected to retain his place against Liverpool. Having struggled to build on his pre-season form, the full-back will be keen on improving his performances over the coming weeks.

Harry Maguire (RCB): Whilst rumours suggest that Maguire’s place remains uncertain against Liverpool, the centre-back is likely to start, having had a decent start to the season. Expected to lead the team on Monday, the England international will be hoping to deliver consistent performances moving further into the season.

Raphael Varane (LCB): Having regained full fitness, Varane is expected to be named in the starting line-up on Monday. Likely to improve United’s defensive performances, the Frenchman will be keen on being a first-team regular over the coming weeks.

Tyrell Malacia (LB): With Luke Shaw having failed to justify his starting place over the last two games, Malacia will be hoping to get his first start against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday. Having shown promising application in his short cameos hitherto, the Dutch left-back will be keen on making the best of his opportunities moving forward.

Midfielders

Scott McTominay (CM): Expected to slot back into the line-up despite poor performances, McTominay will be hoping to deliver an improved display on Monday. With the team having lacked physicality against Brentford, the Scotsman is likely to add an air of presence in the midfield.

Christian Eriksen (CM): Having been deployed in several positions across the two games hitherto, Eriksen is likely to be given a favourable role on Monday. With the team short on quality midfielders for the position, the Danish midfielder will be keen on retaining his place in the starting line-up moving forward.

Attackers

Jadon Sancho (RW): Amongst United’s most underwhelming performers in recent weeks, Sancho will be keen on improving his performances moving forward. Having struggled to build on his pre-season displays, the winger will remain keen on justifying his selection against Liverpool.

Bruno Fernandes (CAM): Despite struggling to impact games, Fernandes will likely retain his spot in starting line-up on Monday. With several competitors for his position, the Portuguese midfielder will be looking to improve his overall performances over the coming weeks.

Marcus Rashford (LW): With little to no competition for his place, Rashford is expected to remain a first-team regular despite failing to justify a place in the starting line-up in recent weeks. Although yet to deliver a promising performance, the winger will be keen on improving his overall contribution moving forward.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST): Expected to retain his place in the starting line-up despite his desire to leave the club this summer, Ronaldo will be looking to contribute to the team’s prospects over the immediate future. Having been a victim of the team’s failure to create goal-scoring opportunities, the striker will be keen on registering his name on the score-sheet against Liverpool on Monday.

Manchester United 1-3 Liverpool
