Tavares Deal Looks to be Incredibly Savvy; Here is What Arsenal Fans Can Expect From Their New Signing

Nuno Tavares, Arsenal

Okay, so Arsenal’s lack of transfer dealings has been frustrating, but the addition of Nuno Tavares from Benfica is an incredibly important and exciting signing for Arsenal. The Portuguese left-back joins the Gunners in a deal worth £6.8m plus add-ons as an understudy to Tierney.

When Kieran Tierney was missing from the Arsenal side due to a series of niggling injuries, the Gunners looked slightly bereft of invention and pace down the left and Mikel Arteta had no choice but to play round pegs in square holes, none of which were quality replacements.

In Nuno Tavares, the Gunners have a powerful, athletic player who can pass wonderfully well over distance. He’s an aggressive, attack-minded player with decent levels of pace and one that is also is blessed with exquisite vision. He has a natural ability to defend and although he still has a lot to learn before he’s the finished article, he is an extremely good fit.

At this point, we should mention his sweet left foot which occasionally grabs a goal and can whip in a defence-splitting cross. Make no mistake, Nuno Tavares is a decent purchase at the right age (21) and he’s a player that Arsenal could use in a more advanced role in my opinion.

Depending on injuries and availability, the left-back could easily play beyond a back four or three and cause all sorts of problems down the left flank. He could also pitch in with the defensive duties at the same time, but I suspect we are getting a little ahead of ourselves and much depends on his inevitable settling in period.

It was clear that the left-back position was a major concern and although Cedric did well in the role on two occasions, Arteta required someone more adept and comfortable in the role. There will be more to signatures with the White and Lokonga deals edging ever closer and rumours now suggest that Arsenal are enthusiastically pursuing Rubin Neves, but nothing is imminent.
