Who is going to partner Saliba in Arsenal’s back four next season ?

Arsenal, Saliba, football

William Saliba will arrive at the Emirates for his first full season of premier league football at the end of the current campaign. It will obviously be a huge change for the 18 year old Saliba who cost £27m in the summer and begs the question, who will partner the talented and highly rated youngster.

The general consensus seems to be that it could and should be Rob Holding who will partner Saliba in the backline and he is coming back from injury and baring disasters will be available for pre season and a full fixture list of premier league games.

However, it may be that for the first part of the season, Saliba could find himself alongside Sokratis to enable him to settle in. Experience is normally employed with newcomers to steady the nerves and bring out the best of an emerging talent.

If that were to happen, one could see David Luiz lining up with Lucas Torreira, something that makes sense from every angle one can imagine. Luiz is a very expansive player and would be useful in an attacking sense as well as additional defensive cover.

If Arsenal decide not to take any further action in the transfer market for another defender, which can’t be ruled out, then Holding is the obvious choice to line up regularly with Saliba. With Chambers and Luiz being the back up defenders for the teenage partnership.

Rumours persist that Emery has an interest in PSG defender Thomas Meunier but the player himself has tried to play down speculation who recently said,

“I have always said that I wanted to stay in Paris. I still have one year on my contract and I still hope an extension can be secured.
“The situation is a little more complicated because I am no longer the preferred choice in my position, but I remain professional.”

Which if you read between the lines doesn’t rule anything in or out and come the summer, you can almost guarantee that a bid from a premier league side will be put in the table.

However, if Arsenal go in for the defender, he will need assurances of regular football which will mean that Emery will have to lose one or more of his current squad next season with Saliba incoming from his season long loan.

The Spaniard is known to rate Rob Holding very highly and this may stop any move taking place in the summer. Holding and Saliba will be the ideal partnership from everyone’s point of view but who knows what is in the bag with Arsenal being very ambitious and dynamic this summer transfer window and can repeat the same next summer.
