Arsenal Begin Talks to Sign €20m Rated Real Madrid Defender This Summer, Face Competition From PL Clubs

Ferland Mendy, Arsenal

According to reports in France, Arsenal have initiated contact to sign Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Gunners are looking to bring in a left-back ahead of next season and identified the French defender as a potential target.

Ferland Mendy started his youth career with French club Ecquevilly EFC in 2002. He soon joined PSG’s youth academy in 2004, where he played until 2012. He then moved on to FC Mantois 78 for a year before joining Le Havre’s youth club in 2013.

In 2015, the French defender made his debut for the senior team at Havre. His defensive skills attracted the attention of Olympique Lyon, who snapped him up in 2017. His performances impressed Real Madrid and the Los Blancos signed him in 2019.

As reported by French publication L’Equipe (via Metro), Arsenal have expressed interest in signing Real Madrid full-back Ferland Mendy in the upcoming summer transfer window. The North Londoners have already opened talks with the player’s representatives to discuss a potential move to the Emirates.

The fight for the Premier League went down till the last match-week this campaign and the Gunners missed out on winning the title by only two points. Despite putting up a spectacular display throughout the season, manager Mikel Arteta has failed to fixate on a left-back.

The Spaniard has switched between the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jakub Kiwior and Takehiro Tomiyasu for the left-back role. Therefore, Arsenal have decided to bring in a new full-back to resolve the manager’s dilemma and Ferland Mendy has been marked as a potential choice.

However, the North London side are facing tough competition from other Premier League clubs for the defender’s signature. The report claims that Liverpool have also made contact with the player’s representatives. Meanwhile, Manchester United and Newcastle United are also interested in signing him.

The Frenchman joined Real Madrid in 2019 on a six-year deal. He has made 168 appearances for the Spanish club so far (stats via Transfermarkt). The defender is set to enter the last year of his contract this summer and the La Liga side may decide to cash in on him.

Meanwhile, the Los Blancos are looking sign Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies in the upcoming transfer window. The Canadian defender is out of contract in 2025 and is yet to sign a new deal with German club. If the Spanish giants manage to sign Davies, Mendy could be on his way out.

Although it boasts the chances of Arsenal signing the 28-year-old, it will not be cheap. Real Madrid will want to recoup the amount they had paid to acquire the defender and on top of that, make some profit from the sale if possible. Moreover, competition from other PL sides makes it even more difficult.

Having missed out on the Premier League title by mere two points, the North Londoners have already begun preparing for the next season. The Arsenal management are looking at suitable reinforecements to bring to the Emirates and push for the league title in the upcoming campaign.
