Arsenal Set to Agree €15m Deal to Sell Defensive Midfielder Permanently This Summer

Lucas Torreira, Arsenal, Fiorentina, Valencia

According to the Daily Cannon, ACF Fiorentina are looking to convert the loan deal of Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira into a permanent one this summer. The Uruguayan has impressed on his loan spell at the Serie A club.

The 26-year-old had a disappointing 20/21 season with Atletico Madrid. On his return to the Emirates Stadium, he failed to make the grade for Mikel Arteta’s team and was further loaned out to Fiorentina. His loan deal included an option to buy clause which the Italian side are now looking to trigger.

The defensive midfielder’s stint with the Serie A club has been a successful one so far and they want to sign him permanently. Lucas Torreira still has a year remaining on his contract with the North London club, but Fiorentina are understood to have struck a bargain with Arsenal for the midfielder. The Gunners are set to receive €15 million for the player.

Initially, the Italian side were reluctant to pay a sizeable amount. Negotiations were also on the cards between both the clubs to lower the price. However, the deal is now expected to be completed in a short period of time given both parties are happy with the current situation.

Moreover, Torreira has openly expressed his desire to continue in Italy. He seems to have found happiness at the club and is keen to extend his stay. Speaking to Fiorentina.it (via Sport Witness), the Uruguayan said:

“I have to find happiness on the pitch. Here I am finding it. The city makes me feel good. My future depends on many things: my contract is with Arsenal, they will certainly reach an agreement between the clubs, but I don’t know what will happen. I want to stay focused on this team until the end,”

The North London side signed him for a reported fee of £26 million. The 26-year-old had a strong start at Emirates and was a regular under Unai Emery. However, ever since Mikel Arteta took over at the club, he was overlooked and demoted to the bench. Regardless, he has netted four goals and assisted six times in 89 appearances for the Gunners (stats via Transfermarkt).

Lucas Torreira, arguably, had the best spell of his career in Italy while playing for Sampdoria. And similarly, after his move to Fiorentina, he is said to have “rediscovered the joy” of playing football unlike at the Emirates Stadium under Mikel Arteta.

The Uruguayan has put in impressive performances for Vincenzo Italiano’s side, making 34 appearances across all competitions with 5 goals and an assist to his name (stats via Transfermarkt). And it certainly doesn’t paint a bad picture for the midfielder trying to revive his career and prove himself in another league.

Furthermore, Mikel Arteta’s side have a long list of loanees this season including Hector Bellerin (Real Betis), Pablo Mari (Udinese), William Saliba (Marseille), and Lucas Torreira, all of whom are wanted by their respective loan clubs on permanent deals in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Matteo Guendouzi (Marseille) and Konstantinos Mavropanos (Stuttgart) are set to effectively turn their loan spells into a permanent deals as well, given their stint with their current club has been a success overall. Therefore, it should come as no surprise if Arsenal are willing to sell Lucas Torreira to Fiorentina permanently.
