Another Setback as Serie A Club Withdraw Interest From Striker due to United’s Demands

Anthony Martial, United, Juventus

The Goal reported earlier this week that Juventus made contact with the entourage of Anthony Martial. The Manchester United striker has expressed his desire to leave the club in the January transfer window, acquiring interests from multiple clubs in Europe, but the Serie A club have reportedly backed out of the deal due to the player’s wages.

The Frenchman joined Manchester United in 2015 from Monaco for a record fee paid for a teenager at the time. Martial lost his way under Mourinho but later found his feet after Romelu Lukaku left for Inter Milan and was handed the No. 9 jersey number by Solskjaer.

He has scored 79 goals across seven seasons for Manchester United in 269 appearances. His best scoring tally in United colours came in the 2019/20 season, netting 23 times and making twelve assists. Under the former manager, he enjoyed 7,404 minutes on the field and found 35 goals.

Martial made his last appearance for the Red Devils against Arsenal on December 2. In total, the forward has made only 10 appearances across all competitions this season with a solitary goal to his name. The 26-year-old needs more game time and is now looking to exit Old Trafford.

Goal reported earlier this week that Juventus are interested in signing Anthony Martial on a loan deal. With Frederico Chiesa ruled out for the season with ligament damage, the Bionconeri are desperately looking for reinforcements for the remaining season and identified the French forward as a suitable target.

However, a move looks unlikely for Anthony Martial as Juventus seem to have withdrawn their interest due to Manchester United’s unwillingness to grant them a concession. The Red Devils are willing to let the player go on loan, but only if a club approaches with the right offer. The Red Devils seek £6m as a loan fee as well as want any interested club to pay the entirety of Martial’s wages.

The Serie A club have been knocked back by United’s demands, with the player’s wages also proving to be a major stumbling block for a potential transfer. When questioned about Anthony Martial, Juventus director Maurizio Arrivabene revealed:

“With the current conditions, it’s not a feasible deal for us.

“Considering certain numbers, there are no advanced talks – we don’t expect any discount from Man United.”

To make things ugly, Martial fell into another controversy with United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick. After last week’s 2-2 draw against Villa Park, the German said the player did not want to be included in the squad.

“He didn’t want to be in the squad,”

“He would have been in the squad normally, but he didn’t want to. That’s the reason he was not travelling with us yesterday.”

Martial denied the accusation on social media the same night by posting on his Instagram story. He wrote:

“I will never refuse to play a match for Man United,”

“I’ve been here for 7 years and I never disrespected and will never disrespect the club and the fans.”

In the pre-match press conference against Brentford, the manager was quizzed again on the future of the Frenchman. Rangnick said that the matter has been resolved and he will train with the team.

Last month, Sevilla made a straight loan offer to sign Anthony Martial, proposing to pay half of the player’s £150,000-per-week wages, but United rejected the deal for the same reasons as Juventus. Barcelona are also weighing upon the option to sign the striker, but they too are struggling with financial constraints.

The Old Lady could have been a good option for the Frenchman, allowing him a fresh start to regenerate his talent. Plus, a new challenge in a new league could have helped the player to regain his confidence and form, which would have helped him to impress teams for a permanent transfer in the summer.
