When Sven Mislintat called time on his role as Arsenal’s Head of Recruitment, the German had been following up various leads from his global contacts on potential transfer targets. Mislintat spent very little time at the Emirates, preferring to cast his eye over the emerging talent unearthed by his vast scouting network.
Mislintat became frustrated by the miscommunication at the club and his dwindling role within it. He subsequently handed in his resignation because the re-organised structure inside the club meant that the ‘Diamond Eye’s’ recommendations were secondary to the wishes of Raul Sanllehi.
However, as I reported when Mislintat left, his recruitment recommendations remained the property of the club and they could act on them in the summer.
The way Arsenal conducts its transfer business is a muddled and complex process at present, with Raul Sanllehi identifying the club’s targets with the assistance of super-agents Kia Joorabchian and Mino Raiola or is it the other way around?
Edu plays his part by using his contacts in South America and representing the club during the final stages of any proposed deal and he was instrumental in the signature of Gabriel Martinelli, whom it’s said was another Mislintat recommendation.
The open-door policy at Arsenal for the super agents will mean that the club could spend more than they need to on Joorabchian and Raiola clients when they could cast an eye over Mislintat’s work for a fraction of the price.
During his reign, Wenger wouldn’t contemplate any dealings with these high profile football agents because of deep mistrust of the way they conducted their business and the fees they demanded.
The flood gates are now open and Arsenal can instantly connect with the top players around the globe via the super agents even if they can’t afford their wages or fees. What’s the point? Raul Sanllehi genuinely runs the risk of ending up with players that the manager can’t use or incorporate into the team which is already rudderless and dysfunctional.
Arsenal’s Head of Football needs to strike gold with his next signings or the spotlight will fall heavily onto his shoulders. We wait to learn exactly how much of Mikel Arteta’s wish list will be fulfilled after Unai Emery’s revelations about Raul’s indifference to the recommendations of the former Arsenal coach.
