Manchester United are eyeing a move for Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic this summer, according to reports in Spain.
United are in need of a midfielder as a replacement to Ander Herrera, who departed the club this summer. A number of potential targets have been linked to the club this summer. At the moment, Rakitic appears to be one of those names on the list.
The player has kept his options open and is understood to be alright with the concept of a move away from Barca. However, he is not in any rush to leave by any means, and would prefer to stay. He is comfortable at the Nou Camp and does not feel the need to leave or force a move away from the club. The only issue that has left him deliberating over his future is his contract.
Several reports have suggested that Rakitic is eyeing a pay rise and is keen on signing an improved deal at Barca. The Catalan giants though, have made it clear that they will not be offering him improved terms in the near future. The midfielder is now 31 years old, and does not represent a long term option for either Barca or clubs such as United that are interested in him.
That being said, the Old Trafford outfit are in need of an experienced head to guide a squad that is sorely lacking in the leadership department. Although Rakitic isn’t a very vocal person, his title winning experience as well as his know-how when it comes to dealing with the daily pressure of being at a big club with huge expectations on your shoulders could be crucial to a lot of the current players at United.

With that in mind, the Red Devils are monitoring the Croatian’s situation, according to Sport. They are aware of his demands and Barca are willing to sell if a decent offer is made. Rakitic was said to be close to a move to Paris Saint-Germain last summer before he decided to reject the move. He is reportedly valued at around £48 million, a fee that United might try to negotiate and bring down. Jose Mourinho is a huge admirer of the midfielder, and was keen on signing him during his time at the Theatre of Dreams.
