Arsenal Working on Deal to Sign €30m Rated Bundesliga Forward, Face Competition From Multiple Clubs

Marcus Thuram, Arsenal

According to latest reports, Arsenal have joined the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram. However, the Gunners will face tough competition from various Premier League sides as well as a host of other European clubs.

The French forward played for Ligue 2 sides Guingamp and Sochaux, before earning himself a transfer to Monchengladbach in 2019. He has churned out a decent amount of goals since joining the German side, 41 goals in 119 games alongside 26 assists (via Transfermarkt).

The 25-year-old’s performances this season has attracted the attention of several top clubs across Europe. He has already acquired 10 goals and 3 assists from just 15 league games this season (stats via transfermarkt).

As reported by The Express, Arsenal are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram in the winter transfer window. The Gunners are said to be working on a cut-price deal to sign the Frenchman in January, with arch-rivals Tottenham also interested.

The striker is currently in the last year of his contract, and will be a free agent next summer. As a result, teams can either reach a pre-contract agreement with the 25-year-old this winter, or snap him up for a cut-price. The report states that the Bundesliga club would be willing to part with the player for as little as £8.7milion.

However, the North London sides would have to compete with multiple clubs for the player’s signature. According to The Sun, Premier League rivals Liverpool and Serie A side Inter Milan have also expressed interest in signing the France international. Meanwhile, Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and Crystal Palace are also rumoured to be interested in signing the Monchengladbach forward, as reported by Milan Live (via TBR).

Fans will remember that Arsene Wenger drew comparisons between Marcus Thuram, and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. In 2020, Wenger told Der Spiegel:

“Thierry Henry had the timing of the smartest footballers. He was also very strong physically, and technically he could do everything.

“In fact, there’s a player in the Bundesliga who reminds me of him – Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach.”

Bayern Munich have also been linked with the striker, as they look to replace the void created by Robert Lewandowski’s departure. Thuram addressed a question on whether he sees himself playing for Bayern Munich in 2-3 years:

“I don’t project myself that far. My plan is to train tomorrow (with Mönchengladbach).”

“Bayern are a very big club. But it is really day by day for me. What would be the point of projecting myself three years ahead? My ambition is to become the best player possible. So, if I want to become the best Marcus possible, it’s tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, not in two years.”

However, Bild reports that the 25-year-old will most likely sign a contract extension with Monchengladbach itself. The club have begun talks with Ramy Bensebaini (27) and Yann Sommer (33), who are also in the final years of their contracts.

Marcus Thuram has largely played either as a left-winger or in a central position. If Arsenal do sign the 25-year-old, he can provide effective cover for Gabriel Martinelli in the left-wing spot. The Frenchman could also be used as a striker to allow Gabriel Jesus some rest.

Arsenal are actively pursuing a winger in the upcoming transfer window and could consider the signing of Marcus Thuram. Economically, a transfer would be easily feasible for the Gunners. The French attacker would also bolster Mikel Arteta’s options in two positions, as Arsenal look to challenge for the Premier League and the Europa League.
