Barcelona Begin Talks to Sign €60m Rated Man United Attacker, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is Keen to Retain Him Despite Setting Asking Price

Mason Greenwood, Barcelona

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona have begun talks with Manchester United to sign forward Mason Greenwood, who is currently on loan at Getafe. The Spanish giants are looking to bring in an attacker in the upcoming transfer window and the English youngster has been touted as one of the possible potential candidates.

Mason Greenwood has been with the Red Devils since childhood. He joined the club at the age of six, playing at the club’s development school in Halifax. In the 2017-18 season, he joined up with the under-18 squad and ended up being the top scorer of the season, while also helping the youth team to win the ICGT trophy.

The Englishman was called up to the senior squad by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the following season. Soon the youngster displayed his finishing capabilities, scoring some outrageous goals and illustrating to the world his skill of finishing. However, he hasn’t made an appearance for the Red Devils since January 2022.

Now, as reported by Sport (via Metro), Barcelona have initiated talks over a potential deal for Mason Greenwood. The La Liga giants have already started to enquire about the current situation of the 22-year-old but no official approach has been made yet.

The Carrington academy graduate still has more than a year left in his current deal at Old Trafford. The youngster’s contract expires in the summer of 2025 and the Blaugrana consider him to be a ‘low cost’ option to bolster their attack line in the upcoming transfer window.

Meanwhile, as per recent news, the Catalans might back away from a potential deal given United’s asking price. According to Mundo Deportivo (via Metro), the Red Devils have set a price tag of €60m (£51.3m) on the attacker, which could axe the move.

The report claims that Deco, the sporting director of Barcelona, held talks over a prospective deal for Mason Greenwood with United’s football director, John Murtough. However, the asking price for the forward is beyond their budget and the Spanish side will not be able to meet United’s valuation.

Greenwood’s Current Equation At United

Things have not gone well for Mason Greenwood since 2022. In January 2022, he was arrested on the charge of attempted rape and assault on a woman. After this incident, the attacker was sidelined from the team and was forbidden from participating in any training sessions.

All charges against the forward were dropped in February 2023. The Red Devils tried to reintegrate the 22-year-old into Erik ten Hag’s squad after his exoneration, but the club received major backlash over his return and decided to loan him to Getafe at the beginning of this season.

However, Manchester United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has denied that the club’s door for the youngster has already been closed. The INEOS chief has said that a new decision on the United academy graduate’s future will be made based purely on facts.

Greenwood’s Progress At Getafe

The English youngster was allowed to leave on a season-long loan to Getafe in the final hours of the 2023 summer transfer window. Instead of being on the sidelines at the Spanish side, it seems that the striker is having a great time playing for the club.

The 22-year-old has featured in 27 games for the La Liga side, scoring 8 goals and assisting 5 times so far this season. He is completely focused on his game at the moment, after defending himself from such scarring allegations. Angel Torres, the President of Getafe, said Greenwood in interested in staying at the club for one more season:

‘He has a clear conscience, he is very comfortable and crazy about staying another year’

‘It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to decide.’

‘In Spain, he has a market but they [Barcelona] have money. Barca’s way of playing would suit him well but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll tell me.’

Future of Greenwood

It will not be incorrect to say that the future of the striker is still up in the air. The Red Devils visibly seem not to be ready to reintegrate him in the squad. On the other hand, Mason Greenwood has thrived in his loan spell, which has warranted the attention of Barcelona.

The 22-year-old has the option to stay at Getafe for one more season or may also get an offer to play for the Catalans. But, it’s Manchester United who will determine his next destination.
