Denis Suárez to Arsenal has arguably been the transfer saga of the month, apart from Chelsea’s move for Gonzalo Higuain. While the Blue half of London have swiftly wrapped up their transfer, the Red half are still helplessly struggling to even take negotiations to the next step. So what is holding the deal back?
To begin with, Arsenal remain unsure on what to do with Aaron Ramsey. The Gunners are considering the possibility of selling the Welshman during the current window. Juventus are the club Ramsey looks set to move to eventually. The question remains as to whether Arsenal can somehow convince the Italians to pay £10 million to sign him early, instead of waiting till the summer when they will get him for free. Unai Emery is keen on Ramsey staying on until the summer, but his transfer could hold the key to two other deals.
James Rodriguez and Denis Suárez are both major targets that the North London club are eager to sign. However, considering their shocking lack of funds at the moment, they may not be able to pursue both those deals.

The key reason negotiations are stalling between Barcelona and Arsenal over Suárez is because the Gunners are not sure if they want to make the deal permanent. Barca though, want to add a clause in the loan move that will force Arsenal into paying around £20 million – upfront, not even in installments – to make the deal permanent in the summer. Emery’s side just simply cannot afford to make such a promise right now, with Champions League qualification not even guaranteed at the moment.
Barca are being extremely stubborn because they risk losing Suárez for a far cheaper price if he is not sold in the summer. His contract with the Catalans runs out in 2020. There are plans in place to offer him an extension. There is no guarantee that he will sign on though.
Ramsey leaving during the current window would give them the much needed funds. However, there is also another huge factor to consider. Midfield is not the only area that needs strengthening in the summer. Arsenal are weak at the back and desperately require reinforcements. Signing Suárez would take away much of their already minuscule budget. With all these factors in mind, it might take a while before Arsenal come to a final decision. There is still time to make the deal happen.
