Lacazette to Leave Arsenal, Abraham to Replace Him-is Everyone Going Mad at The Club?

Alexandre Lacazette, Arsenal, Ekrem Konur, Olympique Lyon

All right, he doesn’t score as many goals as perhaps you’d like him to, but Alexandre Lacazette has been good value for Arsenal in many ways. His work rate is second to none, his hold up play is great, his ability to feed the ball through to others as the attack develops is underrated and he continues to be seen as the second fiddle to the misfiring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Now there’s talk of him making room for Tammy Abrahams, is everyone going mad? Look, I like Lacazette, I’m a fan and I’m not exactly doing cartwheels about another Chelsea player travelling across London to go on cruise mode for £110,000 PW, but Lacazette’s contract is running down and in the big scheme of things, Arteta needs to rebuild from front to back including the number 9 shirt.

I’m not convinced about replacing him from outside the club when Balogun and Martinelli could be the emerging strike force but that’s another topic altogether. Lacazette, like Giroud before him, just doesn’t float enough Arsenal fans board, yet some are happy to continue to give Aubameyang the benefit of the doubt during the biggest and longest dip in his career.

Yes, football is a strange affair because it appears that goals are the only currency for a striker even though there have been exceptional strikers that haven’t scored obscene amounts of goals. Berbatov and Sheringham were more than just traditional goal-getters, they had superb technical abilities and a sizeable intelligence attached to their game.

Giroud offered a different threat for Arsenal up front but it appears that some fans, still harking back to the days of Henry and Bergkamp, wanted more and the same could be said of Lacazette. When Giroud left, a large number of fans wanted him back and that could well be the same for Lacazette who is being courted by Spanish champions Atletico Madrid and that would be a great fit on paper.

Who knows how Arsenal will fair upfront this campaign with rookies Balogun and Martinelli, the inconsistent Aubameyang and possibly the addition of Tammy Abraham.

The creative midfielder position has yet to be filled, Arteta lacks a credible goalkeeping option and there are still questions over the role of right-back. Is it the right time to let go of the Frenchman in the hope that all the other holes are plugged and that service to the strikers will improve tenfold?

That’s been the problem for both the high profile hitmen in the past, a lack of creativity and service into key attacking areas. Aubameyang and Lacazette have had to improvise and create their opportunities and one could arguably say that Lacazette has done the better job without relying on cut-ins from the wing. Arsenal are looking to the future, but perhaps, the club could hold on for another season until the other issues have been resolved.
