Manchester United Lining up Alternatives to Raphael Varane As Talks Have Begun With €65 m Rated La Liga Defender

Leon Goretzka to United, Leon Goretzka Contract offer by United,United players Jules Kounde, exit, united, Manchester United January

According to the Spanish outlet AS, Jules Kounde might be moving to Manchester United if they fail to land Raphael Varane this summer.

This comes in the wake of Sevilla trying to sort out their financial pressure and the board looking to reshuffle the squad a bit. The club have identified Jules Kounde to be someone who can fetch a hefty amount and will be looking for offers in close to €65 million for the 22 year-old frenchman.

Jules Kounde stepped in to the limelight with his transfer to Sevilla from Bordeaux in 2019. Since then he has established himself as a starter with his consistent performances. His 89 appearances for Sevilla have included 6 goals and 2 assists and his spectacular development since his transfer has not gone unnoticed.

In his time at Sevilla, he has garnered appreciation for his dribbling skills and his presence of mind, as he doesn’t dive in to tackles too much. He belongs to the new breed of ball playing, speedy defenders who are able to cover a lot of ground and match the speed of the modern day wingers.

The Paris born Frenchman was targeted by Manchester City during the last summer transfer window, but the deal did not see the light of the day as Sevilla choose to reject the bid then. This season however, is a different story as Sevilla are open to making changes in their squad and are targeting players to fill some other positions of their squad. They believe his transfer will enable them to invest in positions which they need to reinforce.

Kounde didn’t get much playing time at the Euros for the star studded French squad, but his talent and skill are unquestionable and this has led to United actively seeking him out, in case talks for Raphael Varane fall through. According to reports in AS (via Daily Express), Jules Kounde would cost United around £60million.

Should United Make a Move for Jules Kounde ?

Manchester United definitely needs a centre-back to accompany Harry Maguire and going by their transfer actions this summer, it is clear that they do not prioritise finding a solution from within the squad. Manchester United need someone with experience in that position, someone who can lead the defence even in the absence of Harry Maguire.

It is important that the club get someone who is proven in the premier league or who is experienced enough in Europe that he can handle the premier league. They just cannot afford to take a chance, especially at this crucial juncture of the club’s resurgence. While the young Frenchman Jules Kounde is definitely talented and has the potential to develop in to a world class player, he doesn’t have the experience to share the responsibility of central defence at such a massive club like Manchester United.

Finally the price, which is around €65 million as stated in the report, is too high for United to consider given the recent costly transfer deal for Jadon Sancho and also their focus on other transfer targets this summer like Camavinga and Trippier. On the other hand, if someone like Jules Kounde costs that much, United might as well up the ante and push for Varane by making Real Madrid an offer of €65m, which is more than what they are reportedly willing to pay at the moment.

There are no doubts about the talent and skill, but, it doesn’t make much sense to try and get someone who is inexperienced and unproven in the PL for that high a transfer fee. Instead, the club should push harder to land Raphael Varane as he has only one year left in his contract and Real Madrid do not have any leverage, as the player himself is prepared to leave the club. Moreover if United do secure Varane than Real could actually replace him with Jules Kounde and that would work out magnificently for all parties involves.

The Sevilla man can be a target in the future, but, Manchester United do not have the luxury to gamble with such a young player when a player like Varane is interested in a transfer.
