Manchester Utd Favourites To Sign £53m David De Gea Replacement But Does It Make Sense ?

Jasper Cillessen

Manchester United are favourites to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

It was previously reported that Portuguese side Benfica have hijacked the deal and that an agreement was almost in place. However, latest reports from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reveals that no such contacts were on going between the two clubs. As per the report, Benfica president Luis Filipe Viera never scheduled a personal meeting with the keeper as reported previously.

Furthermore, it was also reported that United are still the front-runners to secure Cillessen’s signature. The Premier League giants seem keen on signing the Dutchman, and would be willing to ‘push hard’ to see the switch through.

However, Barca have yet again made transfer business complicated by apparently asking the fee to be paid in cash and not in installments. Being huge figures, transfer fees are usually paid over a couple of years in installments for a healthy financial foundation. But similar to Neymar’s departure, the Spanish champions have no interest in accepting pieces of their money.

Surprisingly though, the Red Devils are ready to comply with their demands and pay the fee upfront. The English side are said to be pushing very hard to secure the Barca goalkeeper’s services.

The Dutch international has remained the second-choice goalkeeper at Catalonia ever since his switch. And though being second in line to Marc-André Ter Stegan isn’t something he enjoys, he is loved by the fans and is often called the best backup keeper in the world. Cillessen is a quality goalkeeper and has stepped up whenever his side needed him in the absence of Ter Stegan. There’s no doubt he’d be a great addition to any team.

However, it makes very less sense as why a club like United would want a goalkeeper with David De Gea and Sergio Romero in their roster. Both of them are proven keepers and are loved by the fans.

De Gea seems to be on the edge about his future at the club to be fair, with his contract expiring in 2020. Though no clubs have been linked with the Spaniard, being on the lookout for a new No. 1 is a smart thing to do.

The 30-year-old is definitely someone who can improve any squad he gets added. It remains to be seen who he will replace at Manchester.
