Manchester United Pull Ahead of Arsenal in Race to Sign £35m Rated Premier League Star

Ruben Neves, Arsenal, United

Arsenal are in full swing to sign key players to bolster their squad for the upcoming season. After wrapping up the signing of Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga, the club are now after a defensive midfielder and one of the names being touted this summer window is that of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

It is no secret that the Gunners are actively pursing central midfielders this summer transfer window. With Granit Xhaka rumoured on his way out to join Jose Mourinho in Rome, and Lucas Torreira clearly failing to adjust to the league and the country, the club have been actively looking at securing alternate options this summer.

Their first priority has been Manuel Locatelli, star of the Italian National team who has been hugely influential in helping his country secure the Euro’s this summer. However, the midfielder’s first choice destination seems to be Juventus at the moment and is desperately waiting for the Turin club to agree on a deal with Sassuolo.

Arsenal are said to be aware of this and already have a long list of deep-lying midfielders as a backup to Locatelli. This list includes AZ Alkmaar star Teun Koopmeiners, Brighton and Hove Albion’s young and dynamic Yves Bissouma, along with their primary target being the vastly experienced Ruben Neves of Wolverhampton Wanderers. As reported earlier, Arsenal are joined in their chase for the 24-year-old by Manchester United who are also in the market for a central midfielder. and are currently ahead of the Gunners to complete the signing of the Portuguese midfielder.

The London club have been in talks with Wolves regarding the 24-year-old player since last month, with a fee of £35m being quoted for his services. However according to reports (via Metro), Manchester are said to have jumped into the scene, are now seem to be at ‘the head of the queue’ for signing Neves. Arsenal, however, are in ‘constant’ touch with his agent, Jorge Mendes.

After agreeing on a deal with Dortmund for Jadon Sancho this summer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are now searching for a deep-lying midfielder. United were ready to battle Chelsea for the signature of West Ham United’s Declan Rice, but Hammers’ valuation of £100m for him have forced the Manchester side to look at different midfield options.

West Ham’s demands are not surprising, given the 22-year-old midfielder was one of the main reasons behind David Moyes’ side finishing 6th in the concluding season. He was also instrumental in England reaching the finals of the European Championship this summer.

Among other alternatives, Manchester United have also inquired about the young French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga. He has only a year left in his contract with his club, Stade Rennes and is deeply interested in a move elsewhere. However, the 18-year-old midfield prodigy is said to have his eyes on Real Madrid or Bayern Munich and is willing to wait for either of the clubs to put a bid for him, over United.

Arsenal’s interest in Ruben Neves is not that strong at the moment. With Xhaka set to leave, he fits the bill perfectly. If they do decide to pursue Neves, the Gunners have to battle United for his signature.
