AS Roma Head Coach Jose Mourinho Reportedly Interested in Signing £27m Rated United Defender This Summer

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Crystal Palace, AS Roma

As per reports in Italy, AS Roma are interested in signing Manchester United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils are looking to bolster the squad as new manager Erik ten Hag begins his reign and the English defender could be a part of the mass exodus.

AS Roma head coach Jose Mourinho is looking forth to a major squad overhaul at the Stadio Olimpico this summer. The Portuguese manager recently helped the Italian club win the UEFA Europa Conference League, their first European silverware since 1960-61. He is now eager to push his team towards a top-four finish in the Serie A next season.

The former Chelsea manager is hoping to continue the progress he has made with the Giallorossi by making some decisive signings this transfer window. To strengthen his squad and most importantly, upgrade his defensive options, the AS Roma coach is believed to be looking to raid his former club, Manchester United, for their right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Daily Mail), AS Roma are planning a swoop for United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Jose Mourinho is keen to bring the 24-year-old to the Italian capital in this summer transfer window. The report states that the Red Devils value their young defender at around €30 million.

The MEN report that United are willing to offload the English full-back this summer. Wan-Bissaka has been told he is not part of the plans under Ten Hag and will be allowed to leave Old Trafford. The club will accept a loan or a permanent move for the player. Atletico Madrid, Newcastle United, and Crystal Palace are also interested in signing the defender.

AWB moved to Man United in 2019 from Crystal Palace. The 24-year-old was a regular starter under, then manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. His impressive display of defensive skills contributed to United’s success – helping them finish third in the Premier League during the 2019-20 season. The right-back kept proving himself vital in the backline as he helped the Red Devils clinch the second spot during the 2020-21 campaign. His consistent performances further helped the Premier League giants reach the Europa League final.

However, Wan-Bissaka endured a frustrating 2021-22 campaign. The Englishman was heavily criticized for putting up an underwhelming performance in the first half of the season. Owing to this, he lost his place in the second half of the season to Diogo Dalot due to a lack of attacking threat. The former Crystal Palace defender made just 20 Premier League appearances (stats via Transfermarkt) this season.

AS Roma are looking to bring Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Stadio Olimpico on a loan deal with an option to buy in the future thereafter. Several English players like Chris Smalling, Tammy Abraham, and Fikayo Tomori have revived their careers and found success while playing in the Italian top-flight. Thus, the United full-back too could be open to joining Jose Mourinho’s side in the hope of getting regular minutes and reviving his career.

Apart from AWB, the Roma head coach is also eyeing United defender Diogo Dalot. The Portuguese full-back enjoyed a good loan spell at AC Milan during the 2020-21 campaign. His defensive abilities made him an integral part of Stefano Pioli’s starting eleven, helping the team secure second place in the Serie A and qualify for the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League.

Diogo Dalot has also emerged as a viable target for Mourinho this summer and could make a return to Italy. However, Manchester United are reportedly not interested in letting the Portuguese leave. One could only wait to find out how things take shape in the summer.
