Manchester United In Talks With Napoli For £90 Million-rated Defender

Napoli

Manchester United are said to have held formal talks with Napoli about a possible move for Kalidou Koulibaly.

January transfer window is nearing and clubs are looking forward to add more depth to their squads to counter their rivals for the rest of the season and ahead.

While it is no secret that Jose Mourinho expressed his disappointment for being unable to land any of his summer transfer targets and is still keen to land at least one of the players in his list. And it’s the defence where he wants to add an attractive and solid centre-back. United have been leaking a lot of goals due to a fragile defence and injuries to several key players hampering their chances.

Koulibaly has grown into one of the most reliable defenders in Italian football ever since his move from Genk to Napoli in 2014. Naturally, this has allowed him to generate interest all over the world and several other clubs maybe in the race to sign him as well.

The Senegalese is also said to have shown interest to feature in the Premier League and this would serve as an encouraging sign for the Red Devils. However, the Manchester giants have been warned they will have to pay huge money to sign the Senegalese international as Napoli want around £90 million for their defender – which would make him the most expensive defender in history. This is partly due to the fact that Koulibaly recently signed a new contract with the club last summer and is a key player for the club.

Unless United are ready to empty their pockets for the centre-back, this could yet be another disappointment for Mourinho and they”ll need to look for other cheaper options. They also failed to land Toby Alderweireld in the summer window due to similar reasons.

The Old Trafford outfit are currently at sixth position with 26 points from 15 games and are 8 points adrift the top four position. They need to be sturdy on all fronts and land as many victories as possible for a possible top-four finish. That’s easier than done but the recent 4-1 victory over Fulham will do their confidence just fine. They need to be more consistent at the goal and perform well in both the halves. This is one field where Mourinho’s side have been troubled a lot.
