Ex-Tottenham defender Would Consider a Move to Arsenal After Terminating Contract

Serge Aurier

According to reports, former Tottenham defender Serge Aurier is considering his future options and is open to a shock move to North London rivals, Arsenal. The 28-year-old full-back is currently a free agent, after leaving Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day by mutual consent after the club agreed to terminate his contract a year early.

Emerson Royal from FC Barcelona is now set to be their primary right-back, with the player recently joining the club in a €30m transfer. Arsenal were reportedly interested in securing the services of Royal, but the player preferred a move to Spurs.

Spurs did all they could to find the perfect club for Aurier in the summer transfer window, with the Ivory Coast international attracting offers from Russia, France, and Turkey. However, not a single bid arrived on the table that seemed suitable and given the player has no future at the club, both parties decided to go their separate ways.

Now that the transfer window is officially over, PL clubs can still take over the services of free agents, provided they have room in their current squad. Moreover, the Gunners are keen to add another right-back even though they signed young Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu on deadline day, Hector Bellerin joining Real Betis has left a gap in their squad.

Arsenal were the biggest net spenders in the Premier League during this summer transfer window, but failed to recoup any transfer fees from the planned clear-out of the squad, except the £25m for Joe Willock to Newcastle. Now, Arteta wants to add further depth to his squad.

Arsenal were linked with Serge Aurier after the player decided to leave Spurs and become a free agent. Soon after, the Gunners were offered the chance to sign him and now, it is being reported that Aurier might be interested in joining them.

Serge Aurier, a boyhood Arsenal fan, has a lot of Premier League experience under his belt. With the Gunners focusing to build a young squad to suit the club’s model, a need for an experienced leader is extremely beneficial for their overall development.

The Ivorian International received a lot of stick from Arsenal fans on social media. Several fans are unable to find the connection between signing an experienced player and the profile of the players Arteta seems to be aligning the club’s model with.

Things are now starting to heat up about the club’s management and the Chief Executive of Arsenal, Vinai Venkatesham, recently addressed the club in a meeting:

“Of course, I write this update against the backdrop of a hugely disappointing start to the season. I know how tough this is for all of you, both as supporters and employees, with criticism coming from all angles.

“At times like this it is critical we stick together and stay positive. We have a very important run of games coming up after the international break and I’m confident we can and will come out fighting.”

Arsenal have the likes of Calum Chambers, Cedric Soares and now Takehiro Tomiyasu to cover for the right-back role. A deal for an arch-rival star seems highly unlikely unless Arteta decides to add further depth to his already lacklustre squad.

Plus, it will take a lot for Serge Aurier to win over the support of Arsenal fans after he spent four years with their North London rivals Spurs. With the Gunners now experiencing the worst start to a PL season in 67 years, it seems highly unlikely the Gunners’ hierarchy would go for a controversial move and further complicate things.
