Manchester United Express Interest in £50m Rated PL Centre-Back, Club Preparing Summer Move

Marc Guehi, Manchester United

According to latest reports, Manchester United have expressed interest in signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The Red Devils are looking to bolster their centre-back department ahead of next season, and the Englishman is one of the potential names on their watchlist.

Guehi has been a pivotal addition to the Crystal Palace squad since signing from Chelsea for £18m back in 2021. He has put up very impressive displays and is a constant fixture for the side, having already made 102 appearances across all competitions (Stats via Transfermarkt) since his move to Selhurst Park.

The 23-year-old defender has also gone on to impress England head coach Gareth Southgate. His performances was rewarded with a call-up to the National squad, making his debut in March 2022. He has so far featured 9 times for the Three Lions.

According to Goal, Manchester United are planning a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Red Devils are in the market for a new centre-back and the English youngster has attracted the club’s attention.

It could be a big summer for the Englishman as a move away from Selhurst Park looks likely, with Premier League leaders also interested in the player’s services. As reported by the Telegraph, the Eagles expect to obtain more than £50m for one of their star players.

The 23-year-old still has more than two years left in his contract with the South London side. It is unlikely that the defender will remain at the club beyond the summer of 2026 and therefore, the Eagles will want to cop a good transfer fee out of him while they can.

The Eagles have shown remarkable foresight by recognizing Guehi’s budding leadership skills and have bestowed upon him the title of vice-captain at such a young age. The club isn’t merely rewarding him for his on-the-pitch performances but is stressing his abilities to become a future leader.

This only further highlights the young centre-back’s skillset and ability as it is a testament to the confidence his teammates have placed in him. These are clear signs that Crystal Palace would love to build a future with him and will not let him go for cheap.

Why Should Manchester United Sign Marc Guehi

The Manchester United defence clearly needs a revamp before heading into the 2024/25 season. Under new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club is looking forward to making some major changes. Some of the major changes may see the likes of Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire leaving the club, thus leaving a spot open for a new and younger centre-back.

Considering that Marc Guehi still has a couple of years before he hits his peak, it will be an interesting deal for Manchester United to consider. This season, they have often found themselves dropping their heads when faced with setbacks. Having a young leader at the back could definitely help address the issue.

How Will Marc Guehi Fit Into The Manchester United Squad?

With the likes of Varane and Maguire expected to leave the club, Guehi could be expected to partner up with Lisandro Martinez in defence. The Englishman’s dominant right foot offers a crucial outlet to play out from the back. This is something manager Erik ten Hag is desperately trying to build.

With almost three seasons completed in the Premier League and nine caps earned for his country, the Chelsea academy product boasts ample experience and has proved himself in the league as well. The following quote from Guehi ahead of the International break only shows his maturity:

“If a defender can go in a game and seem to be doing absolutely nothing then he is doing absolutely everything right. Obviously there are times when you might have to make a last-minute tackle because of whatever is happening but if I can avoid being seen in a game, as crazy as it sounds, I am doing my job.”

The young center-half is currently out of action after picking up a knee injury in February. The resilient defender will definitely be fighting to come back to fitness and push for a place in the England squad for the Euros in the summer.
