United Target £40m Belgian Wonderkid Who Could Prove To Be A Game Changer For Them

Manchester United are considering the possibility of signing Youri Tielemans in the summer as a replacement for Ander Herrera.

According to reports in Belgian news outlet HLN, Leicester City are eager to sign Tielemans on a permanent contract at the end of the season, when his loan deal expires. Monaco have apparently slapped a pretty hefty price tag on the midfielder’s head – a fee said to be in the region of £38 million. A figure like that would mean the Foxes would have to break their previous transfer record, the £30 million they spent on Islam Slimani, to sign him.

However, the club are supposedly willing to do so, and talks with the Ligue 1 club are ongoing. It may not be all plain sailing though, as they face competition from a club they probably would not have wanted to go up against in the transfer market. Manchester United are eyeing a move for Tielemans as well.

The Old Trafford outfit are desperate to bring in midfield reinforcements in the summer. A number of players are approaching the end of their contracts at the club. However, the main purpose for bringing Tielemans in would be to replace the outgoing Ander Herrera.

The Spaniard has been a crucial player for United this season. He is a fan favourite with the way he wears his heart on his sleeves in games. With his contract expiring in the summer though, he appears on his way out. Talks over a new contract have been ongoing but appear to have reached a standstill. Reports suggest the player is demanding a weekly wage of £200,000.

Considering Herrera turns 30 this year, the club feel it would be wiser to spend that money elsewhere. Tielemans, who played against United for Anderlecht in the Europa League two years ago, seems to be the target they want to replace the Spaniard with.

Tielemans moved to Leicester from Monaco in January on loan. Since then, he has absolutely sparkled. In the six appearances he has made so far, he has scored once and assisted three times in the Premier League. United do have multiple targets in mind, but unlike Leicester, £38 million isn’t a daunting fee for United.

‘I do not know what is going to happen this summer,’ Tielemans told Sky Sports, when asked about his future.

‘I feel really good here, but I have to see the other options too. That is normal, and I do not have to rush myself.

‘We are now in April and we will see over the next months. At Leicester, I can be part of something great. They will have a new training ground, the stadium will be much better than it is now with more fans coming over. ‘So it can be something great for the future.’

Brendan Rodgers, who also recently moved to the King Power stadium, is keen to see Tielemans stay. However, he respects the fact that the player still belongs to Monaco and will discuss matters when the time comes.

‘He’s a top-class young talent,’ said the Leicester boss.

‘But I always have to respect he’s a Monaco player. I’m sure there will be discussions between the two of us. ‘He’s certainly a player who I would love to continue working with. He’s only going to get better.’
