Man United Tracking €25m Rated Serie A Full-back on Ten Hag’s Demand

As per the recent reports, Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries is a key name that has emerged on the transfer list of Manchester United. After a dismal season, Man United and co. are looking for a complete squad revamp to get the club back on track. A key area that new boss Erik ten Hag wants to rectify this summer is the right-back position that currently features Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

United bought Aaron Wan Bissaka in 2019 for a reported fee of £47 million (as stated by Transfermarkt) from Crystal Palace. The young Englishman was an instant hit under then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. With adept defensive prowess, Wan-Bissaka functioned as a key defensive component for Solskjaer’s side.

The main complaint that arises when witnessing the former Palace defender’s game is his ample shortcoming when moving up the pitch. A major reason why the Marcus Rashford-Luke Shaw partnership works (or rather used to work) is because of Shaw’s confidence and ease on the ball when moving forward, helping him link up with Rashford on the left and creating chances by either whipping in crosses or cutting inside. Wan-Bissaka has struggled to replicate something similar as he appears wonky when going forward and fails to provide accurate crosses.

To resolve this problem, United are looking for an attacking full-back that can perform the defensive job along with his offensive duties. According to Calciomercato (via The Sun), Manchester United have identified Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries for the job. The Dutch manager is claimed to be a huge fan of his fellow countryman and the club are currently tracking his progress.

Dumfries ended his club season with 5 goals and 7 assists (stats via Transfermarkt), mainly functioning as a right wing-back for Simone Inzaghi’s side. A highly adept full-back going forward, the 26-year-old can be a vital utility player for Ten Hag, who sometimes switched to a three-at-the-back formation during his time at Ajax.

The report states the Red Devils might face a stiff challenge from Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich, who possess the allure of Champions League football as well as strong chances for domestic league success. Inter won’t be too reluctant to part ways with Dumfries since it will provide them with better chances of retaining their star centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.

On the other hand, the Serie A club are actively working to use the Dutch defender in a swap deal to bring Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku back to the San Siro after the English club bought the Belgian for around £98 million last summer. The Red Devils will face stiff competition from a host of different clubs for the Dutchman’s signature which will more likely inflate his transfer fee.

Still 26, Denzel Dumfries can become a crucial signing for the ETH era at Manchester United. However, breaking the bank on a fullback when more pressing positions such as defensive-midfield and the right-wing are there to be addressed will not be a good idea for United.
